Chapter 1

 

 

Fionn sat at the massive Nordic pine boardroom table along with his five executive colleagues. He looked around him and took in the scene. God....they all look so interested, he thought as the PowerPoint charts flickered on the big plasma screen. He wondered if they really were as interested as they looked. Or am I the odd one out? To his colleagues, he looked calm, even engaged in the mundane events taking place in front of them. They had no idea how he really felt. Inside, he was about to explode with frustration. Like a hot dryer with no vent...ready to spontaneously combust because he had no outlet for his creative flow. He wanted to yell, "How many more of these stupid, pointless meetings do we have to sit through?" Already there had been too many to remember. Let’s see, thirty years times an average of 2 per week. Well over 3 thousand, anyway, and that was a low estimate, he thought. It was Monday morning (again), and the weekly Executive Management Meeting was underway. This was when the company's performance was reviewed each week. It was a very important meeting. But this morning, he was not listening to the Sales Manager, who droned on about this week’s activities. Zoned out, he knew now that he had nothing left in his reservoir; nothing more to give to them, and he was cruising on autopilot. The absurd and unbelievable thing was that nobody seemed to notice this. How could that be? Was he such a good actor? How long could he get away with this deception? He was bored to tears with the professional life he had built for himself over half a lifetime. To an outsider, Fionn had it all. A beautiful family, a nice home in Ireland, along with a vacation home in Spain, and an expensive company car. But when he looked at his accomplishments, he felt empty inside. Yes, he held a very senior position in the company, and he knew he was respected by his colleagues. But "oil" was not the most dynamic industry when it came to marketing initiatives. His job as VP of Marketing had quickly become so mundane and routine that he managed to finish in four hours what used to take him all day. Other people did the donkey work. He literally had many of his afternoons free, kicking around the office,
